Pharmaceutical Packaging: Aluminium PVC and PET Alu PE

Blister packaging is an important part of drug packaging. Blister packaging can be divided into aluminum-plastic blisters, aluminum-aluminum blisters and aluminum-plastic-aluminum blisters. The materials and processing methods of different blister packaging are different.

The sheet used for blister packaging is called hard sheet or film. Commonly used ones are: PET (polyethylene terephthalate) hard sheet, PVC rigid (polyvinyl chloride), PS (polystyrene) hard sheet. PS hard sheet has low density, poor toughness, and is easy to burn. When burning, it will produce styrene gas (a harmful gas), so it is generally used to produce various industrial blister trays.

Medicinal PVC rigid film is the bottom material of aluminium PVC blister packaging nad PTP blister foil is the sealing layer. PVC hard sheet has moderate toughness and is not easy to burn. When burning, it will produce chlorine gas, which has a certain impact on the environment. PVC is easy to heat-seal and can be sealed by sealing machines and high-frequency machines. It is the main raw material for producing transparent blister products. In order to improve the barrier properties of PVC hard sheet, PVC/PVDC composite hard sheet can be used.

PET hard sheet has good toughness, high transparency, is easy to burn, and does not produce harmful gases when burning. It is an environmentally friendly material, but the price is high and it is suitable for blister products.

Blister shells in European and American countries generally require the use of PET hard sheet, but it is not easy to heat seal, which brings great difficulties to packaging. In order to solve this problem, people compound a layer of PVC film on the surface of PET, named PETG hard sheet, but the price is higher.

Polyester/aluminum/polyethylene (PET/AL/PE) composite film for pharmaceutical and food packaging is a composite flexible packaging material that uses a biaxially oriented polyester BOPET (PET for short) film with good strength, transparency and friction resistance as the surface layer, a printed soft aluminum AL foil as the middle layer, and a heat-sealable low-density polyethylene LDPE (PE for short) film as the inner layer.

The layers are bonded together with adhesives to form a composite flexible packaging material with good comprehensive barrier properties to moisture, oxygen and odor. It is mainly used as printed flexible packaging bags for medicines and foods.

Due to its strong comprehensive advantages and incomparable superiority of its materials, although it will cause certain harm to the environment, pharmaceutical plastic products are still widely welcomed, and its usage has grown rapidly, and has partially replaced other materials such as glass infusion bottles.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers can choose appropriate pharmaceutical packaging according to the barrier performance requirements of the packaging materials and the packaging form of the drugs, and comprehensively consider other factors such as transparency, aesthetics, convenience of taking medicine, and economy.
